New York, NY - Bernie Journey presents his inspirational pop/dance music in celebration of the Gap's 40th anniversary during an up-close performance at the GAP, 100 Grey Rock Place, Stamford, CT on Thursday, August 20th, 2009 with a Free Live Show beginning at 7PM. Bernie Journey's self-titled debut CD and his sophomore release "The World in the Eye of the Beholder" will be available for purchase at this event which is open to the general public.

On August 20, 2009, every Gap store in the U.S. and Canada will simultaneously host an exclusive, live acoustic music night to celebrate Gap's 40 years of heritage in jeans and music. Each store will feature a different musical group, with Bernie Journey chosen to perform in the Gap in Stamford, CT. Gap's ties to music go back to its first store in San Francisco that opened 40 years ago selling jeans and records. Today, Gap continues to connect with people through music.

Bernie Journey's January 27, 2009 sophomore release "The World in the Eye of the Beholder" displays his infectious lyrics and hypnotic rhythms. All tunes were penned by the man himself with the hope that he might inspire others in life. Amanda Ghost Named President Of Epic Records

Amanda Ghost has been appointed President, Epic Records, it was announced by Rob Stringer, Chairman Columbia/Epic Label Group.

Ms. Ghost will join the company effective February 16, 2009 and be responsible for overseeing the overall management and creative direction of Epic Records.

She will be based in New York and report directly to Mr. Stringer.

"I am delighted that Amanda has chosen to bring her creative vision and flair to the Epic label. In the changing environment of the music business record labels undoubtedly need to be complete partners with the artistic community and Amanda will be the perfect executive to meet that challenge," said Mr. Stringer.

Montclair, NJ – January 13, 2009 -- A diverse group of independent musicians and creative designers have been named winners of the 8th Annual Independent Music Awards (IMA).

Winners in more than 50 album, song and design categories were selected from
thousands of submissions from around the globe and range from established
and emerging talent including Martin Sexton, whose career-spanning
retrospective Solo won in the Live Performance Album category; multi-genre
virtuoso, Dan Zanes took top honors in the Children’s Album category with

Toby Lightman’s new independently released album, “Let Go” follows her two Atlantic Records releases, 2004's "Little Things" and 2006's "Bird On A Wire", titled after her late uncle’s 1969 LP. She's toured the country extensively, having appeared with such artists as Rob Thomas, Jewel, James Blunt, Gavin DeGraw, and on one memorable evening, Prince. Toby’s national TV performances include the Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, NBC's Today Show, and CBS' Second Cup, among many others. She can currently be heard singing the theme song for NASCAR on Fox broadcasts.

Growing up outside of Philadelphia, Lightman went her own way when it came to music, listening to hip-hop and rock, but also falling in love with Stevie Wonder and devouring the Ella Fitzgerald and Etta James records in her father’s oldies-dominated collection. Encouraged by her high school music teacher, Toby started to train her voice by working in various choral groups. She made her solo debut at graduation, cutting loose on Paul Simon’s neo-gospel anthem “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and bringing some in the audience to tears. When she returned from her freshman year at the University of Wisconsin, where she was studying broadcasting, “I started going to jazz clubs in Philadelphia and singing the only two songs I knew,” she says with a self-mocking laugh.

While in college, Toby took what she learned from being classically trained on the violin as a child, and taught herself to play the guitar. She started writing songs of her own shortly after that. Later during her college years, in a spur-of-the-moment decision of unprecedented boldness for an academically achieving suburban kid, she took off a semester to spend five months in Bangkok as a singer in a band of Philadelphia musicians. The experience built her confidence and heightened her desire to take the ultimate plunge, but she went back to Wisconsin, beefed up her course load and got her degree along with her class before heading to New York and taking a job bartending while pondering her next move. She had no idea how to proceed, but resourcefulness and luck can combine in magical ways. “Manager, production deal, record deal—all happened in about six months,” she says, sounding like she still doesn’t quite believe it.

Now, having all of those experiences behind her, Toby feels that much more confident putting this new record of songs out independently. “The music business seems to be changing almost hourly! I can barely keep up with all the new and interesting ways there are to release music and communicate with the audience. It’s an exciting new world and I’m just so appreciative that my fans want to hear my music, in whatever form it takes!”

The Johnny Griffin classic “Chicago Calling” can also be considered a reference to the suburbs of the Windy City . Skokie, IL native, John Temmerman, influences include tenor titans like Chicago’s Eddie Harris, Dexter Gordon, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter and multi-instrumentalist Rahsaan Roland Kirk. His third recording “Live in Evanston – John’s Mixed Bag captures his band in live quartet and quintet performances from 2007 and 2008.

Temmerman’s interest in jazz was piqued as a teenager; he plays tenor, soprano and alto saxophone and clarinet. After years spent earning an advanced degree, establishing a family with his wife Tina and their son Joe and developing his professional business career, he was drawn back into the music world in the early 1990’s, started a trio in 1995 and began performing live.

With his solid, no-nonsense straight ahead approach to music it’s no surprise that he’s inspired by the legends -- and a few unsung heroes as well. He cites the Miles Davis classic Kind of Blue as a major inspiration, but you can immediately hear the influence of the great Long Tall Dexter in his performances. “When I hear the Dexter Gordon album Go and the song ‘Three O’Clock In The Morning, that’s what a tenor saxophone is supposed to sound like. Dexter had a big tone and less is more approach”.

You’re as liable to see Temmerman playing soprano in Chapel on Wednesday morning with the Gospel Choir at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America ’s Lutheran Center as on the bandstand of a jazz club. “Playing with the Lutheran Center Gospel Choir is a joy. Amy Winehouse arrested on suspicion of drugs possession

LONDON - Amy Winehouse has been arrested on suspicion of drugs possession, police and her spokesman said Wednesday.

Winehouse's spokesman, Chris Goodman, said the arrest is connected to a video that is alleged to show the troubled singer taking drugs at a party in her home in north London.

Britain's The Sun tabloid in January published still images from a video that it claimed showed Winehouse inhaling fumes from a small pipe. The images were said to have been filmed during a party at her London home.

London's Metropolitan Police said a 24-year-old woman was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of drugs possession. Goodman confirmed his client was in police custody.

"Amy Winehouse voluntarily attended a London police station today by appointment. She was arrested in order to be interviewed and is cooperating fully with inquiries," Goodman said in a statement.

"The interview relates to a video handed to police earlier this year," he said.

Winehouse is famous for her hit "Rehab." She has had a turbulent private life. Last month she was cautioned by police for assault after she slapped a man during a night out. That means no charges were filed, but the incident was placed on her record.

Shortly after The Sun published still photographs of the video, Winehouse entered a London rehabilitation center.

This week marks the launch of Echoboost.com, a social music network that helps people discover music made by unsigned musicians in their own communities and across the country. Formerly RadioFire.net, Echoboost.com premieres with over 6,000 registered artists and 12,000 songs.

Offering a new alternative for fans of online radio, Echoboost's custom music player encourages listeners to Boost the songs they enjoy and Drop the songs they don't. Songs that receive the most Boosts will continue to be played at random on the Music Player according to genre and location, while Dropped songs will make way for new tracks. In addition to assisting musicians build their local fan bases, songs receiving the most Boosts will be featured on regional and national Echoboost play lists.

"When 'American Idol' meets YouTube, you get Echoboost, a social network for user-generated music," explains founder and president Matt Henage. Fall Out Boy reveals 'Young Wild' dates

Fall Out Boy fans have managed to "unlock" all the dates on the pop-rockers' upcoming Young Wild Things Tour, which will also feature Gym Class Heroes, Plain White T's and Cute is What We Aim For.

The North American trek launches Oct. 18 in Columbus, OH, and makes its way from the East Coast to the West Coast into early December. In the midst of the outing, Fall Out Boy will stop in New Orleans Oct. 28 to perform at the Voodoo Music Experience.

The on-sale for the next round of tickets begins Saturday (9/8) and members of Fall Out Boy's official fan club, The Overcast Kids, can score presale ducats beginning today (9/4). More information is available at FOB's website.

Pet Shop Boys disco 4

Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe have decided to compile so of their most important remixes in their next álbum "Disco 4" that will be published on the 24th of September.

We all know about PSB's irony and the lack of intelligence of EMI-Parlophone, their record label, when it comes to promote and sell new ítems of these two great artists.

Promotion and distribution problems always seem to go hand in hand and, with this new release, its again proven that EMI is not only one of the biggest record labels in the world but also the silliest.

In Disco 4 we have remixes that the fans already have and that have already been released so the fans will not be buying them again. Perhaps a few wont have them if theyre recent fans but the vast majority already have the records these mixes belong to.

To make things even worse, the only new track is a remix of integral which will only be released on promo for radio stations and club djs. Of course, all these copies will appear on Ebay instantly. Its not enough that theres only one previously unavailable track on the álbum, it wont be getting promoted as its only scheduled for this promo-only release. The Integral remix wont be available on download, either, so whoever wants it will have to buy the whole álbum just for the one track. Of course, they have done a video for Integral and you will be able to see it courtesy of the rather poor audiovisual experience that YouTube is.

Is it not easier to release Integral as a download? To release it as a single with two new tracks (Pet Shop Boys have no shortage of unreleased material, quite the contrary) and include the video on the release? Is it so complicated to do things properly and with the respect that the biggest selling UK duo of all time deserves after 20 years in the music business?

We don't know who is to blame for the clustered disaster that Disco 4 is, whether it's EMI-Parlophone or Pet Shop Boys themselves. What we do know is that theyre no not exactly going to set the charts on fire with such a substandard offering.

Down-to-earth indie labels adopt green packaging

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - There wasn't a CD manufacturing operation in the entire country that satisfied the eco-friendly needs of Cloud Cult leader Craig Minowa. So he built his own.

Minowa started Earthology Recordings on a farm an hour north of the Twin Cities in Minnesota.
From the geothermal and wind power that runs the farm, to the recycled CD cases with soy ink-engraved packaging that come with every order, Earthology is striving to become the most environmentally aware CD manufacturing/replication business on the planet.

So it's no surprise that in his downtime from touring with his critically adored psych-pop outfit, Minowa fields calls from unsigned artists and indie and major labels. Often, Minowa says, there's only one factor that stops an act or a business from going the green route.

"Unfortunately, it does come down to a financial thing," he says. "If the eco-friendly stuff is 3 to 5 cents more per unit, most of the major labels will shy away from it, since those pennies add up. If it were affordable to do it the environmentally friendly way, then everyone would be doing it."

Plenty of smaller labels can relate, but more are seeing eco-friendly measures as a worthwhile expense. Brady Lahr of Los Angeles-based Kufala Recordings invested nearly $15,000 to create his own biodegradable shrink-wrap by partnering with Prizm, a maker of transparent cigarette paper (yes, you can smoke it).

PATENT PENDING

But it wasn't a completely altruistic move. Lahr filed for a patent, and Kufala stands to gain if other labels or artists start using his shrink-wrap -- not to mention the publicity and marketing opportunities it now affords him.

"Every day you turn on the news there's something about climate change or global warning or ways to make the world a greener place," Lahr says. "If we're not doing that in business, we're not looking out for the interest of our customer, which is the No. 1 priority in any business."

And don't talk to Seattle label Sub Pop's Internet guru, Andrew Sullivan, about the cost of going green. "That's a cheap way of looking at it," he says. "It depends on whether you're thinking long-term expense or short-term expense."

At Sullivan's urging, the indie powerhouse made news last year when it became the first record label to be certified "green-e," thanks to its purchase of vouchers from the Bonneville Environmental Foundation to subsidize the use of renewable energy. It wasn't a huge cost to the label, says Sullivan, who asked that the specific dollar amount not be printed, but it's safe to say that it's less than $10,000.

Proving that it wasn't just a marketing stunt, Sub Pop went a step further. The label recently did away with jewel-case CD advance copies to switch to plastic-free, recyclable paperboard.

"What we found out is that even though it costs 30 cents more to do the actual packaging, it costs 25 cents less to ship it," Sullivan says. "Plus, it creates less waste, and that's radical."

Others have gone a step further. Matador and Beggars Group have shifted to all-digital advance copies, a cost-cutting and eco-savvy move. Sullivan says Sub Pop isn't ready to go that far yet, but technological and consumer advances may eventually force the music business in a completely pro-environment direction, even as green costs come down.

"A couple of decades ago, organic foods were a niche market and not very accessible," Minowa says. "Now, organic foods are even in Wal-Marts. In being so much more accessible, it receives the distribution that makes it more affordable. I think we'll see the same thing with environmentally friendly CDs on the market. That is, if digital downloads don't take them over first."

Traps Magazine Swings To Success, Resulting In 57% Newsstand Sales And Expanded Distribution with Borders

San Jose, CA Enter Music Publishing, publishers of diverse drum/percussion magazines worldwide, has experienced tremendous success with Traps Magazine (www.trapsmagazine.com). Referred to as the magazine that covers The Art of Drumming TRAPS premiere issue sold at a highly efficient rate of 57% on newsstands in the United States and abroad. As a result of this response from a readership of pro drummers and baby boomer bangers returning to the instrument, TRAPS has upped U.S. distribution with an agreement to sell additional copies at Border stores nationwide.

While we had done market research on our target audience, serious younger drummers and those in the 40-and-older demographic, this initial sell-through is really outstanding, said Phil Hood, publisher of Traps. We certainly appreciate the support that we have gotten from drummers."

The first issue of TRAPS debuted September 8; 2006 and featured Max Roach on the cover. The magazine also included a history of the drummers of Black Sabbath and a note-for-note transcription of Steve Gadd's famous solo on Steely Dan's Aja.

The second issue was even heavier on jazz with a cover story on Jeff Tain Wattsthe beat behind the Grammy-winning albums of Branford and Wynton Marsaliswhile a feature on The Drummers of Blue Note explored fifty years of jazz recordings through the powerful work of Elvin Jones, Billy Higgins, and Art Blakey.

This makes the initial acceptance and interest in TRAPS even more powerful, since these jazz drummers, though highly appreciated, don't attract nearly as much attention as rock legends. But the editors plan to mix it up. The upcoming autumn issue (on sale July 7) features an unpublished interview with none other than John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) on the cover, plus a family tree of Frank Zappa drummers. It's leavened by jazz features (Idris Muhammad, who plays with pianist Ahmad Jamal) one-on-one master classes (with Steve Smith of Journey and Vital Information), photo essays, and annotated transcriptions of jazz and rock masterpieces.

Distributor Acceptance
Going into the TRAPS project, we met with excellent acceptance for this new title at both the wholesaler and retailer level (which is basically unheard of these days), said Mike Werner, VP, Distribution, Rider Circulation Services. We were able to secure a distribution almost the equal of With the first issue of TRAPS having been on sale for over six months, that issue has performed at levels above and beyond expected (with a sell-through above 50%). Results have been especially good in the all-important bookstore/newsstand class of trade. The international numbers are coming in strong as well . . . Looks like another hit.

TRAPS plans to grow through both newsstand sales and subscriber promotions in the coming months, with expanded foreign distribution and more direct mail.

I've never had a magazine get the initial response from readers that TRAPS has, says Hood. They write us, email us, call us, and the drumming forums have lots of discussions about it. They seem to really respond to the long articles and professional emphasis. TRAPS cover stories tend to run 25 pages longan anomaly in today's publishing world, where most magazines assume readers have attention deficit disorder. We believe there are people who love the subject and want to go deeper, says Hood.

Aftershow Rocks the Sunset Strip

It's all about charisma. And Knifer's got it.

Knife's guest appearance dominated the stage at the House of Blues in West Hollywood last Saturday, eclipsing the other 11 acts during the aftershow keeping everyone in the venue on their feet.

So packed with people on every possible crevice of the venue, I figured it was only matter of time before someone somehow violated me. Squeezing to the front of the stage, over-excited fans were screaming and whistling as Knife deliberately smoked a joint.

Knifer prolonged his entrance to the stage, waiting until DJ Mambo Del Diablo was in place, right down to his back-up female vocalists, who froze in identical diva-esque poses. It was all so dramatic, baby...

From the minute Knife rapped the first strains of "Eastside Story" in his raw, high-pitched voice, the audience was his. They screamed, they echoed, they sang to the chorus... the only thing they didn't fall prey to was the tired old "Put your hands in the air... and wave them like you just don't care..." that came later on.

For what it's worth, Knife never stopped moving. Whether it was choreographed Supreme-like swaying with his back-up vocalists or waving around his arms ecstatically throwing gang signs, Knife had a serious gangsta groove going on. The audience seemed to get into it. Even the poor bastards floating around the back got down wit their bad selves (excluding, of course, the usual idiots who just stand at the bar, drinking and yapping on their cell phones with their backs turned to the stage).

His music defies traditional classification by mixing rap, soul, rock and punk. But Knife himself is harder to describe, a mixture of gangster-attitude and mellowness.

Knife sang most (if not all) the songs from his album "East Los Most Wanted", adding bluesy covers to "Real Maravilla Gs" and "Maravilla" and some new material not on the current record.

Knife's DJ kept up the pace during the show, taking time to jam for the audience and prove herself as more than just window-dressing. At one point, Knife stepped off the stage with the back-up vocalists and let DJ Mambo Del Diablo take the spotlight with her crazy turntablism.

Despite all the people rammed against me, it was a brilliant performance. Despite the masses of bodies and the bloody heat, Knifer's voice and music are unique and he puts on a good show.

AUSTIN TX, May 16, 2007-The Eyes of Texas and the world focus once more on Austin, Texas on May 19, as the city and music community celebrates "The Road to Austin," commemorating Austin's musical history and current designation as the Live Music Capital of the World.

The special event on Auditorium Shores is expected to draw twenty thousand people for "The Road To Austin" free concert featuring major and local artists with roots firmly embedded in the city. During the concert, singer/ songwriter/performer/activist Kris Kristofferson will receive the inaugural Texas Legends Award for his contributions to the culture and music scene in Texas and Austin in particular.

A premier of the documentary short, "The Road To Austin, Live Music Capital Of The World," directed by Gary Menotti ("Austin City Limits") will be shown on a towering 30' x 50' video screen and will intro the live performances. The documentary chronicles the history, characters, artists, pundits, and milestone events and venues that have propelled Austin to international status as the live music capital of the world.

Musical director and producer Stephen Bruton says of the ambitious event, "Every one of the artists who will perform on Saturday are representative of the best of what Austin has contributed to music and the world. We have created a grand stage for them and they'll give all of us the best that they've got. I guarantee that everyone in attendance will see and hear the very best of music and of our city."

Bruton's involvement with the project has been a labor of love giving him the platform to honor his friends and fellow musicians. that will appear on his CD set to be released Aug 19. He said his songs address stereotyping of homelessness and other areas that Mcleod said need attention that helps organize programs at the out of the cold shelter, people in transition, and views his music as a way of reaching out to the public and brings awareness to the mainstream. CAGE9's POWERMAN 5000 TOUR UPDATE

May 15, 2007 (Los Angeles, CA) -- Cage9 returns to Los Angeles after a successful six week US tour. For the first three weeks singer/guitarist Evan Rodaniche pulled double duty also serving as POWERMAN 5000's guitarist. Cage9 left Los Angeles on March 6, and after three days of non stop driving, they took a break in Chicago to hang out with Filter guitarist Geno Lenardo. The tour began the following day in Traverse City, Michigan to a sold out show at Streeters, segued through a blizzard in
Reading, Pennsylvania, and finished strong at The Station in Portland, Maine. OPERAPALOOZA! Music City Community Chorus Announces June 5 Concert

May 8, 2007 (NASHVILLE) - The Music City Community Chorus presents OPERAPALOOZA!: a free concert of Chorus Music by the Great Opera Composers, on Tuesday evening, June 5 at 7:30 pm at First Baptist Church, Broadway and 7th Avenue in Nashville.

For the new Music City Community Chorus' second outing, conductor Renee Grant-Williams chose to present works by composers rarely heard in a choral setting. OPERAPALOOZA!: Chorus Music by the Great Opera Composers will include operatic favorites Giuseppi Verdi's "Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves" from Nabucco, "Regina Coeli" from Pietro Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana, and the "Anvil Chorus," from Il Trovatore, also by Verdi.

The featured work of the evening will be the Stabat Mater by Gioacchino Rossini.

"Rossini's Stabat Mater has excruciatingly beautiful melodies, but there may be reasons this exquisite piece is not often performed," says Grant-Williams, "It demands precise, but passionate, ensemble work throughout. And, of course, a tenor who can sustain a high D flat."

Mayor Bill Purcell announced the formation of the non-profit Music City Community Chorus back in August of 2006, placing the sixty-voice chorus under the umbrella of the Metro Nashville Community Education program.

"I'm amazed by how quickly this diverse group of singers has developed into an ensemble that has an identity and sound," says director Renee Grant-Williams.

Widely known as a vocal coach, Grant-Williams' conducting credits include positions as founder and director of the San Francisco Community Chorus; director, Student Division of Vocal Music at the University of California, Berkeley; chorus master, Opera Division, Banff School of Fine Arts; and choir director Second Presbyterian Church, Nashville.

Written by Mr. Smith and recorded by Citizens for a Better America, the song is the centerpiece of a campaign to collect over 100,000 signatures for the "Go Away Paris Hilton" initiative.

To date over 12,000 signatures have been collected at the website, http://www.goawayparis.com/, where anyone proving they are human, can sign the petition, buy a men's or women's t-shirt, camisole or sports-t to support the initiative, and view the "Go Away Paris Hilton" music video.

When first previewed as a demo last fall (the band was then called The OK Go Away Paris Hilton Apparatus), the song attracted over 20,000 hits overnight on the web's #2 music community PureVolume.com.
